Spore Dispersal

Family: Polypodiaceae

Genera included in this family and found in the Adirondacks

The sporangia (fruitdots) of these ferns are found in clusters (sori), on the underside of the fronds. Some of the genera have an indusium which covers the sori.
The individual sporangia resemble tootsie-pops. They are round and encircled with an annulus. The spores are relased when the sporangia dries. Tension increases on the sporangium until the annulus breaks open at the four o'clock position. The annulus then acts like a slingshot and catapults the spores to the location where they will germinate and give rise to the gametophyte.
