Limnology

This information was collected in the North Bay of Raquette Lake during the month of August, 1998 and 2002. You may use this information with your students to introduce and discuss fresh water studies and graph trends of Raquette Lake. You may find it interesting to graph and discuss temperature, light, dissolved oxygen and pH trends in this lake as they correspond to the depth of the lake. Dissolved oxygen and pH were recorded at 5m intervals.

Questions for Exploration

  1. Graph the data from the tables to help visualize the lake trends.
    1. Depth (m) vs. Temperature (oC)
    2. Depth (m) vs. Light
    3. Depth (m) vs. Dissolved Oxygen
  2. Compare data from 1998 and 2002 and note any similarities or differences
  3. How are the temperature trends of Raquette Lake related to it's stratification?
  4. How is temperature related to light penetration?
  5. According to the 2002 data, percent saturation of oxygen is over 100%. What two factors contribute to this?
  6. How are temperature and dissolved oxygen related?
  7. What accounts for low dissolved oxygen levels at the bottom of the lake?
  8. Why is pH lower at the bottom of the lake?
