Creating a PowerPoint presentation (Office 2010 but should be OK for 2016)

Follow along as we create a basic PowerPoint presentation including several slides, some jumps to specific slides, graphics, images, and sound.

Getting started

Find the PowerPoint icon on the Start menu or desktop and launch the program.

	A template for a Title slide provides a space for title and subtitle text boxes. You can add a Title slide as your first slide by using the New slide button on the Home menu.
	Add a title and subtitle by clicking in the appropriate fields and typing your text. We'll call our presentation "Victor Hugo". Include your name in the subtitle field. Note that you may modify the font through the Font area of the Home toolbar as you would in a word processor.
Insert a New Slide by clicking on the New Slide button in the Home menu . Select the Title and Content layout. This may be the default. If you want a different layout, you can change the layout using the Layout dropdown options.
As you did before, add your text to give your new slide a title and add 3-4 pieces of information in the bulleted text area. We'll use the title: "Hugo's Life" and add bullets for: Born 1802 Wrote Died 1885 You can also drag the edges of the text area to reposition it. You can center the title or not, as you prefer.
	Now insert a slide with two content areas so you can insert both graphics and some bulleted text.
Add a title. e.g. "Literary works". Add some more bulleted information: Cromwell (1827) Hernani (1830) Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) Les châtiments (1853) Ruy Blas (1838) Les contemplations (1856) Les misérables (1862)
Add a graphic such as clip art (online pictures, your own images) by following the directions on the slide.
Add a final slide with a catchy title such as "the end". Include a photo. You can copy this one by and paste it into your slide. (You don't have to download it as you would for a web page.)	http://blog.visitguernsey.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/600full-victor-hugo.gif
A number of different views of your presentation can help you work effectively. The views may be selected through the view buttons at the bottom of your presentation window or through the View menu at the top of your PowerPoint window. Normal view Slide Sorter view - see all slides and move slides around Reading view - best idea of how the final slide will look. Notes Page - easier to write or edit notes to go with the presentation Slide Show - run your presentation with any animations and effects
	Add a background to your slides by using Background area the Design menu. Format Background can be applied to single slides or to all slides. Change the color of the background and apply the color to all of your slides.
	Insert a sound on a slide by recording your voice. Use the Insert menu to insert a Sounds and select the Record Sound option. A simple sound recorder lets you record from your microphone and give the sound a name. Note that sound inserted in this manner will not be compressed, so it will take up a LOT of space, much more than mp3 format. Also note that older versions of PowerPoint could be flaky about how it handled sounds that are too big. The 2010 and later versions have been vastly improved in this area. More on this later. There are many other ways to include sound or movies from Clip Organizer, from files, or from a CD. See articles below for including sound as narration, using mp3 sounds, changing the actin settings of sound buttons, playing sound in the background, etc.

Try your hand at these:

Create Transitions between slides (e.g., dissolve, fly in or out, blinds, boxes, sounds, even use a timer to move to a new slide).

Use Animations Ribbon for graphics and text on your slides to make slide objects appear one by one.

Hide Slides in your presentation to skip over them if you wish (this allows the traditional linear PowerPoint presentation to use branching).
Right click on a slide (Slide Sorter or left pane) and select Hide Slide.
Place Action Buttons with hyperlinks on one slide to jump to another slide, like links on a web page.

Once you have drawn the shape on your slide, you can modify its Action Settings.

We will study these features later to see how we can make more pedagogically appropriate PowerPoint lessons.
