I went to school at Binghamton University (SUNY) and at the Univ. of Illinois Champaign-Urbana where French literature, CAI, and computational linguistics were my main interests. A year teaching English at the Université de Metz introduced me to video production. I have also taught business English in the Techniques de Commercialisation dept. at the IUT in La Rochelle, France. After visiting positions at Saint Lawrence Univ. (NY) and Middlebury College (VT) we came to SUNY Cortland where teacher training is the top priority. Most of our students go on to become teachers.
Projects: FLTEACH with co-moderator Jean LeLoup.
Teaching culture using the national standards (Products, Practices, Perspectives).
Teaching in the Target Language.
Multimedia projects in the FL classroom (especially French Civilization http://www.cortland.edu/flteach/civ/ with my wife, Marie).
Using film to teach point of view.
Languages Across the Curriculum - LAC.

FLTEACH grew out of our participation in articulation meetings with high school teachers where it was clear to all that we needed regular communication leading to better solutions for our common problems.

SUNY Cortland has a MS.Ed. in Second Language Education in with specializations in French, Spanish, and TESL leading to NYS certification.

I spend a lot of time in France (my wife and children are French) and feel strongly that a high level of linguistic and cultural competence is essential for successful teaching at all levels.
