I. OBJECTIVES
1.1 / 2.1  Students will give advice related to interpersonal relationships.
1.2 / 3.2  Students will listen to a song giving advice about relationships.
4.1  Students will use direct objects with affirmative and negative commands.
4.2 Students will observe similarities in relationships in France and the US.

II.  MATERIALS
The song, "Aime-la", written by Michel Berger and sung by France Gall.
Les Plus Belles Chansons, France Gall, Warner France, 1994 (amazon.com).

III.  PROCEDURES
This contextualized grammar lesson was created using the PACE model (Adair-Hauck & Donato).
 
Presentation in context
  1. Activate background knowledge by asking students what advice they might give their friends about boyfriends/girlfriends.
  2. Encourage the consideration of the verbs aimer, regarder, appeler, écouter, garder, laisser, quitter, ignorer. Which is the most important?
  3. Have students listen to the song while following the lyrics.
  4. Go through the song and underline the verbs used.  Are these merely suggestions for people?  Or are these things that they must do? Are they good ideas or bad?
Attention to form
  1. Give students cloze activity for the song. 
  2. Students listen to the song and fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb with its D.O.P.
Co-construction of grammar explanation
  1. As a class, review the correct verb / D.O.P forms in the cloze activity 
  2. List verbs on the board (aimer, garder, quitter, laisser). What is the difference between the positions of the D.O.P in affirmative and negative commands?
  3. Have students write additional forms for the verbs found in the song. (Ne le garde pas. Quitte-les. Ne les aime pas.)  When would they give this advice?
Extension activity
  • Students make up an imaginary boyfriend or girlfriend (silly is good) and describe the person to a partner.
  • The partner makes up some "advice" to give about this person based on the description.
  • Each person asks the partner for advice.
