In order to provide easy access to materials you create, or even to materials of web sites by other people that you wish to make available to students, you will need to have a single access point for your course, project, school site, etc. In this lesson, we will set up a personal web page for your ICC 523 projects. This will look like a table of contents that will list all of the projects. Each project name in the listing will eventually be changed into a link to that project.
Begin by examining the main pages of students from previous years. You will find these towards the bottom of the syllabus page for the course.
You might want to modify the page that you began last week or you may wish to begin from scratch. Your table of contents might look something like this:

When your work goes online, it will be located in your root directory space on a web server. In other words, the space on your web server will be the same as the folder on your computer (or USB drive) for projects done in this course. That is where your index (TOC) page will be. The name of this file must be index.html. "Why?" Because a file named index.html has a special property on a web server. If a link points to a folder without specifying a file name, the server will send a file names index.html if one is present. This can help you make shorter web addresses. Each of the projects that you do for the course will have its own folder (directory) that will be located within this main (root) folder for the course. |
