COURSE   OBJECTIVE:   To   help   students   gain   an   insight   into  the learning-teaching  process  of  SECOND  MODERN    LANGUAGE  acquisition.   The  central  theme  is  contextualized  language  instruction  and  all discussions,  reflections,  and  practice  will  be  based  on  current theories  which  present  meaningful  language  use, real  communication, and interaction    among    language  learners.    Through    multiple activities,  students  will  understand  the  integrative  approach  to modern  language  instruction  in  which  language  is  presented,  taught, and  assessed   in  meaningful   contexts,   in   order   to   maximize   the development  of  proficiency  in  the  target  language.

ANCILLARIES:  Will  be  distributed  during  the  semester.

COURSE  REQUIREMENTS:
 

• Attendance  and  Active  Participation  (one  class  may  be  waived.)
• Weekly  assignments:  as  per  attached  schedule.
• One  research  paper:  topic  to  be  discussed  with  Instructor.
• Portfolio  of  finalized  version  of  activities  developed through the  semester.
• Final  exam.
GRADING RATIONALE:

NOTE:  Due  to  the  highly  participatory  nature  of  this  course,  late  work  will  not  be  accepted  and  there  will  be  no  exemptions  in  the "Attendance  and  Active  Participation"  requirement.

• Review  "Terms  and  Concepts  of  Assessment Criteria"  (p.15-17  and  handout)  and "Characteristics of Proficiency  Ranges from Novice  to  Superior"  (p.18-21)
• Obtain  a  L2  high  school  textbook  from Curriculum  library and bring  to  class.

JANUARY  26  (2nd  class)

• Framework  of  a  Proficiency-oriented  Classroom Environment  (Ch  3)
• Classification  of  Classroom  Exercises.
• Practice  by  L2  groups:  using  your  L2  textbook,  a)  choose one exercise,  b)  decide  whether  it is manipulative, meaningful  or communicative,  c)  rewrite  it  and  change  it  to  one  step  higher.
