I. OBJECTIVES:
    (4.2, 2.1, 2.2)  Students will discuss the common areas in their neighborhood in comparison to plazas in Venezuela.
    (1.1, 1.2, 3.2, 2.1, 2.2)  Read material on the plazas of Mérida, Venezuela.
    (1.1, 1.2)  Understand the names and locations of the plazas.
    (4.2)  Create a plan for a plaza in their own neighborhood.

II.  MATERIALS:
    -Make handouts (copy pages) from Plazas section of Mérida, Venezuela web site
    -Photos of plazas in Mérida
    -Chart
    -Overhead transparency
    -Overhead projector

III.  PROCEDURES:
    PRE-READING:
    1.  Have students discuss their neighborhood.  Is there a central place where people go to spend time?  What is it? What do you call it?  What do people do there?  Who goes there?   When do they go?
    2.  Pass around photos of the plazas in Mérida.  Discuss what a plaza is, and why people go there...

    IDENTIFY MAIN ELEMENTS:
    1.  Have students read the internet page about plazas in Mérida.  Have them note how many there are and list their names on the handout.

    IDENTIFY DETAILS:
    1.  Underneath the names of the plazas, have students list the Avenida that each is located on, and the person to whom it is dedicated.  (Not all places have avenidas or names of people).

    ORGANIZE/REVISE:
    1.  Go over the chart as a class.  List the information on the overhead.

    RECREATE TEXT:
    1.  Students will create a plan for a plaza in their neighborhood.  They will decribe the layout, location, and explain to whom it will be dedicated and why.

    REACT TO TEXT:
    1.  Students will develop their plan for their plaza, and display them in the school.
    2.  Students will search for more information about plazas on the internet.
