Model Description
It is not a theory of learning and instruction that indicates how to teach. It is a general method of approaching the design of any effective course of instruction or any lesson plan…p.344

Specification of Theory
(a) Goals and preconditions
To teach higher-order thinking skills.

(b) Principles
It is a general method of approaching the design of effective course of instruction/lesson plan. “Intelligence can only be formed as a result of performing and internalizing methods’ operations.” p.368

(c) Condition of learning
The information is presented in many ways. Students must be open to learning new methods and ideas in order to generalize them to other problems (problem solving skills).

(d) Required media
None

(e) Role of facilitator
The facilitator provides the information to the students. Helps them think through the material and provides feedback to shape their learning. Helps teachers teach enormous amounts of knowledge in a short amount of time and it prevents “many errors.” p.365 Students acquire a powerful tool for structural analysis and comparison of knowledge. p.365

(f) Instructional strategies
1. Guided Discovery – 6 steps. Help aid students’ thinking, help students be aware of what they are thinking, help them apply the methods learned, help them internalize the method, help them automatize the method and finally repeat steps 1-5.
2. Expository Teaching (same six steps occur but the first two are provided to the students in ready-made form)
3. Some steps are taught through discovery and some through expository methods, depending on the teacher’s objectives.

(g) Assessment method
The assessment should match the way the material was taught. For example if you taught students how to count using handouts, oral counting and reading a story about counting, the assessment might be filling out a partial worksheet and then orally filling in the missing number when the numbers were dictated to the students.

Formative Research & Application

(b) Research method: Qualitative
