Text: Linear Algebra and its Applications, Fifth Edition, by David C. Lay.

Goal: The goal of this course is to introduce the students to the theory and applications of linear algebra and to illustrate the type of abstract thinking required in higher mathematics.

Assignments: Homework problems intended to test and deepen your understanding of the concepts presented in class will be assigned. These will be collected, and 1-2 problems from each homework will be chosen at random for grading. It is very important to note that the solutions to the problems will be graded in full, and just an answer will not earn any credit. Sorry, no late homework will be accepted.

Quizzes: You will have roughly 8-10 short quizzes which will be given on Fridays to test your understating of the material discussed the week before. These are tentatively scheduled for Feb 3, Feb 10, Feb 17, March 3, March 10, March 24, April 7, April 14, April 21, and April 28. Sorry, no makeup quizzes will be given, but the lowest quiz score will be dropped.

Tests: You will have 2 tests and a Final Exam. The exact dates for the tests will be announced in class at least one week in advance, but for now these are tentatively scheduled for during the weeks of Feb 20 and March 27. Please see me in advance if you have a conflict with any of these times and we will make appropriate arrangements.

Grading:Your grade will be determined as follows:

Homework 20%
Quizzes 20%
2 Tests 40%
Final Exam 20%
Total 100%

Content: Topics covered include: Systems of Linear Equations, Matrix Algebra, Determinants, Vector Spaces, Linear Transformations, and Eigenvalues & Eigenvectors.

Attendance Policy: Attendance is very important and shows that you value your education and take it seriously. By choosing to miss class without having a legitimate excuse to do so, you forfeit your right to seek my help with material discussed during your absence.

Honor Code: You are encouraged to discuss the homework with others but be an active participant and do not let others think for you. On the other hand, quizzes and exams are to be strictly your own work.

Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will be dealt with harshly. Please read and understand SUNY Cortland's Academic Integrity Statement.
