Romeu's Journalistic and Writing Activities:

Jorge Luis Romeu is a writer, with two short story books published, in Spanish, under his Pen Name, "Beltran de Quiros". The first one, "Los Unos, Los Otros y El Seibo", was published in the United States in 1971, while Romeu was still a college student in Cuba. It deals with life in the UMAP labor camps in Cuba, between 1966 and 1968. It has been assessed by Dr. Seymour Menton, in his treatise "Prose Fiction of the Cuban Revolution" (Texas Press, 1975) as one of the two best short story books on the Cuban Revolution, published outside Cuba (Dr. Menton was not aware, at the time, that Romeu was still living in Cuba). Romeu's second book, "La Otra Cara de la Moneda", was published in 1984, after he left Cuba, during the Mariel Boatlift of 1980. Both books were edited by Ediciones Universal, Miami, FLA.

Romeu, who is a member of International P.E.N., is also an active newspaper journalist. He frequently writes for El Nuevo Herald (Miami Herald), the Syracuse newspapers (Post Standard, Herald American) and the Hispanic Link News Service (that distributes nationwide via AP wire), among other publications. Selected articles can be found in the Web.

His newspaper articles appear frequently in the United States, both in English (Syracuse Post Standard, Syracuse Herald American, San Antonio Light, Houston Chronicle, etc.) and in Spanish (El Nuevo Herald, La Opinion, El Hispano de Sacramento, etc.). He has also published in Mexico (Excelsior) and in Spain (El Correo Gallego, Diario Montanes).

Romeu's radio and TV journalism activities included hosting the WXTM-TV3 (NBC) public service television talk show Entre Vecinos , that aired from 2002 to 2005 in Chanel 3, Syracuse NY, on the third Sundays of every month. The show dealt with Hispanic issues that affected the Syracuse and Central New York area, and was discontinued for lack of funding. Romeu also produced and directed the short wave weekly radio magazine, Sobremesa (1994-98) for La Voz del CID, a radio station that broadcasted to Cuba from Central America, as well as producing interviews/opinion segments for NPR's Morning Edition at WAER (public radio) in Syracuse NY (1991-92). Romeu has been for many years a frequent guest panelist of Mesa Redonda, a program of Radio Marti, the short wave station of the Voice of America that broadcasts for Cuba. He has also appeared in many other radio shows as invited guest, discussing Cuban and Hispanic issues.
