Service
Service has been an important part of establishing myself
as a faculty member at Cortland and a member of a larger community.
I have participated in, and am currently serving as, a
member of various committees on the departmental level, school
level, college level and SUNY system level. I see service as
a way of both enhancing one's learning and developing a sense
of civic pride and values. I enjoy having positive
working relationships with my colleagues and thereby being
able to collaborate at all levels.

Advisement
Currently I have 28 advisees in various stages of completion of their programs. In the past semesters, I have made enormous efforts in learning the curriculum and learning from my colleagues in my Department and outside the Department. Through the support of Dr. Andrea LaChance who serve as Advisement Coordinator, through discussions and consultations from my colleague Dr. Lin Lin and other senior faculty advisers such as Dr. Cynthia Benton, Ellen Newman, I have gained more confidence in providing academic advisement for students. More importantly, through advisement, I have learned more about the curriculum and programs in our department, School of Education, and other programs on campus.
Each semester I have developed a routine of contacting advisees early in the semester to develop their degree plan and to problem solve any individual issues that they may have. I sent all of them an email message through banner system that a time schedule was put on my office door to allow advisees to make appointments for at least a twenty-minute advisement. More appointments and more time were scheduled when necessary. Each student has his or her own specific needs for advisement depending upon his or her stage in the program. I provided advice and support in balancing work and study, in studying abroad, writing recommendation letters for their temporary and professional job searches
I understand my role as much more than a faculty member who helps students to select and register for appropriate coursework. I keep in touch with advisees through emails and phones and informal conversations. I promised all my students – advisees as well, that I would reply their emails within 24 hours and I keep this promise and do so. When working with advisees, I try to reach beyond course works and learn who they are as individuals to help students feel a personal connection to the professional world of education as they emerge as future teachers. Although this takes time, I believe it is worthwhile.
I continue to make efforts in becoming an excellent advisor. Being a very conscientious
professional, I am enthused to support our students in all
capacities.
Teaching Teams Collaboration
Together with Dr. Kim Rombach, Dr. Susan Stratton and Dr.
Karen Hempson, we experimented with building a new undergraduate
thematic methods block: Threading Technology Throughout the
Curriculum - we call it "T3C". T3C was a methodology
block that focused on the thoughtful integration of contemporary
technology applications into the subject areas of math, science,
and social studies and literacy. I developed a website (View
T3C Webite)
that facilitated the communication among the
teaching team professors and with the students.
