Always a
favorite: Pretzels - Bretzel. Sometimes eaten with mustard,
or, believe it or not, "Schmalz" (bacon
lard).
And then there is Apfelstrudel.
Homemade, of
course!
Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of
Germany
, was
the
topic
of a biography on
Culture Day. So we don’t just eat! What is learned on Culture Day is
part of the course, and part of all the
tests.
So far you have seen us go
from food to politics, and here we shift gears again and go into an
entirely different field: Architecture. The Bauhaus school was
revolutionary in its designs in the pre WWII years, and its
influences are still felt in today’s furniture and architecture.
Asparagus is something highly prized in Germany, so we have
to have Asparagus Soup!
We don’t only talk about the distant past and food,
but also established pop idols
like Udo Lindenberg, who has
been rocking Germany for many years.
Another famous German
desert is the Black Forest Cherry Cake
-
Schw
arzwälder Kirschtorte. It’s
great to energize the class, not only for German, but for all the
other classes of the day. By the way- German deserts are know to not
have anywhere nearly as much sugar as American
ones.
Not to neglect the sciences, one of
our Fridays was spent with Conrad Röntgen,
the inventor of the x-ray.
Who hasn’t heard of
German Potato Salad? Well from time to time it is available for the
tasting on Culture Day. Sometimes even with Ring Bologna!
Friedrich von Schiller
is one of the two greatest writer/poets of Germany, and has also
been a topic of discussion. Both because of his politics and because
of his great contribution to the German literary
heritage.
One of the best kinds
of German cakes is the fruit cake. However, the German kind is not
the type that gets passed around from relative to relative, because
nobody likes it. These cakes have a butter dough, and are layered
with fruit(s). Sometimes they come with a glaze.
And then there is ..... Karneval / Fasching/
Fastnacht!!!
So come
and have fun while learning! There's lots more to
experience. See you in class!
