On 30 November, 2005, I received a message from Jayne Hyslop transmitting to me the content of a newspaper announcement that she had found in the Hornellsville Tribune, Hornellsville, New York, Thursday, November 6, 1862:

IRA HARRIS CAVALRY

A third Regiment of this celebrated cavalry (5th and 6th New York) is now being organized by order of the War Department. It is to be commanded by Col. JAMES W. SAVAGE of NEW YORK who been with Gen. FREMONT ever since the commencement of the war. The Lieut. Col. is to be P.G. Vought, formerly a resident of Buffalo, and lately a Major in the gallant 5th.
