his biography is very interesting - he ended up being one of the famous photographers of the century in newly "opened" japan. if you're interested, you can find further details through google, or in several english language photography publications

McMahon, a great-great-grandnephew of this man, has written to me telling me that "Charles Freeman" was an assumed name used by Dominick Rafferty because he had jumped ship from the U.S. Navy the same month of his enlistment in the 12th NY Cavalry. David has said, "Dominick Rafferty, aka Charles Freeman, enlisted at Brooklyn, N.Y. and joined company E of the 12th at Rocky Run, N.C., as a recruit from depot on 1/17/1864. He had previously been in the navy, stationed on the Valley City and the Chippewa as a fireman, in the same area of the tidewater. He died on 5/22/1914 at the Soldiers and Sailor Home in Quincy, Illinois and was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Canton, Illinois."]
