[During December 2000 I corresponded with Luanne Teesdale, who is a great-great-granddaughter of John W. Walker (1835 - 1918). She provided me with the following biographical sketch.
John W. Walker was born October 16, 1835, in Prussia. According to his granddaughter, Irene Cox, he came to the U.S. at 7 years of age with his father and stepmother. [Irene Cox is apparently Luanne’s grandmother.—K.J. Wooster]
He was living in Buffalo, New York, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. His personal description at that time listed him as 5 feet 6 inches tall with a dark complexion and dark hair and dark eyes. His occupation was a shoemaker prior to his enlistment.
On August 5, 1861, he enlisted as a Private in Captain C[harles]. B. Coventry’s Company I of the 26th New York Regiment of Volunteers. [That would be the 26th Regiment of Volunteer INFANTRY, otherwise known as “Second Oneida Regiment; Central New York Battalion; or Utica Regiment.”—K. J. Wooster] He mustered into service at Rochester, New York on August 9, 1861. On August 30, 1862, John Walker was wounded at the second battle of Bull Run. He was shot in the leg and the bullet fractured his tibia. He never reformed with Company I and was given a disability discharge from Emory Hospital, Washington D.C. on March 31, 1863. At that time he wanted his correspondence to be addressed to Buffalo, New York.
The Certificate of Disability for Discharge reads as follows: “Gun-Shot fracture of Tibia, with atroply of the muscles of the leg, which will prevent him from doing duty in the term for which he has enlisted. Disability one half.”
Five months later, John Walker enlisted in Company H of the 12th New York Cavalry. He mustered into service August 27, 1863, as a Saddler. A later pension document indicates that he was discharged with his Company at Harts Island on July 19, 1865. I have not been able to find a location by the name of Harts Island. [Almost certainly this is the islet in Long Island Sound that was later renamed Riker’s Island. I cannot explain why his record indicates that he was discharged there rather than at Raleigh, N.C. with the rest of the regiment.—K. J. Wooster.] On a web site [this web site.—K. J. Wooster], it indicates that the 12th New York Cavalry mustered out at Raleigh, North Carolina.
At Buffalo, New York on April 4, 1867, John Walker enlisted in Company D of the 43rd Regiment of the U.S. Infantry. He was to serve a term of three years. On April 9, 1869, he applied for a disability discharge due to the injury he incurred during the Civil War. The surgeon who examined him found John Walker incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of “old gunshot fracture of the Tibia of right leg at the junction of the middle with the upper third and partial anchylosis of the ankle joint-said to have been received at the second battle of Bull Run August 30, 1862. Disability ¼." He was discharged from Fort Brady (Sault Ste. Marie), Michigan on May 16th, 1869.
At some point after his discharge from Fort Brady, he made his way to Mecosta County, Michigan. John Walker and Mary Vickiuck (Wezorick) were married in the Lutheran Church in Big Rapids by C. L. Wuggazer on September 12, 1875.
At the age of 62, in 1897, John Walker began receiving a Civil War pension of $12 a month. Prior to his death on January 26, 1918, he was receiving $30 a month. On February 11th, 1918, Mary Walker applied for the Widow’s pension and received the sum of $12 a month.]

Now, as of July 2002, I own the muster-out roll for Private Frank Wilson. I purchased it on eBay. It was advertised with the following description:

A very large form (approx 11 by 30 inches) used to muster out a Private Frank Wilson what[sic] was a member of Company K in the 12th Regiment of the New York Cavalry Volunteers. He was mustered out on June 8, 1865 at New Berne NC. The muster out sheet is signed by a Frank H. Smith, a 2nd Lieutenant. This is an interesting document for it[sic] account of settlements of lost items and the bonus for being a volunteer. A wonderful historic Civil War document related to a black soldier for you collection. [Emphasis added]
My main motivation for purchasing the document was that I expected that it would give me evidence of an African-American trooper in the 12th. Silly me! It turned out that the mustering officer, Second Lieutenant F. H. Smith, (probably himself white) was an officer of the 14th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery.
Caveat emptor! But on the other hand, the description did not explicitly say that Wilson was black. Perhaps I could have returned the purchase, but that was more trouble than it was worth, and anyway it is an interesting paper.
