Shepard Settlement Cemetery

The Shepard Settlement Cemetery is located in the hamlet of Shepard Settlement, New York. Settled in the first few years of the nineteenth century, the small community is in the Town of Skaneateles, County of Onondaga. It is located a few miles NE of the Village of Skaneateles.

On this page you will find two listings of those who are interred at the Shepard Settlement Cemetery. The first listing is an early one by William Martin Beauchamp. I believe his data was recorded somewhere around the turn of the twentieth century. The second (and more complete listing -- the one presented as a table -- also see supplemental notes which follow table) was done by Norma Shepard Shultz in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Her material came from both gravestones and from various written records. It was indeed a momentous task, and for this I am indebted to her. I wish also to acknowledge the enormous amount of work put into the project by her husband, Bill Shultz. It was he who created the database and made a copy available to me.

The following email message with DOB and DOD for William H. Babcock was received by Kenneth Wooster from Elizabeth Keough Greene in March 2000:
This is a great site. Thank you to all who did all this fantastic work. I have a little information to add, if you would like it. I am William H. Babcock's grandniece. He was born February 7, 1873, in Towanda, Pa., and he died April 4, 1939. He was the brother of Rose Jane Babcock KEOUGH, who was my grandmother. Charles and Frank KEOUGH were her sons. I believe they resided on Foster Road until 1939. Charles was gassed with mustard gas in a tank in France during World War I. He came home totally disabled. I wonder if there is anyone still living in the area that would remember the family. Rose was a cook at a nursing home of some kind. If you ever receive any inquiries on this family please feel free to put them in contact with me.
