Welcome

The Cortland Writers Association welcomes writers of all genres to join in publishing the annual literary magazine Transition. CWA aims to produce a thought-provoking and intimate publication with a diverse range of subject matter through creativity & passion for the written word.

The first edition of Transition was published in the spring of 1953 by Professor Robert Rhodes and was sustained until the mid 1990s. In 2003, the magazine was revived by Dr. Alex Reid and Dr. Victoria Boynton as a staple of the growing Professional Writing program at SUNY Cortland. This year, 2010, is another transitioning year for Transition: for the first time the publication is being split into a two-volume literary experience. Transition: Poetry will feature 25 poems and Transition: Prose & Short-Stories will display 12 longer pieces. With more enthusiasm for the magazine has come more creative, passionate and intriguing works thus making the growth of the magazine delightfully inevitable.

Each year Transition is released at the Professional Writing Seminar at SUNY Cortland's Scholar's Day Conference held in April.

CWA is also proudly responsible for Poetry Slam Fundraisers held in both the Fall and Spring semesters, as well as a weekend writing retreat to Raquette Lake in upstate New York. Both CWA and Transition are funded by the Mandatory Activity Fee and Student Government Association at SUNY Cortland.
