Adding Variety to Your Writing


Below are two complete paragraphs.  They discuss another holiday in the USA.  Both follow standard guidelines for a paragraph, but one seems to flow a bit better when reading.  Read both paragraphs and see if you notice the differences.




Paragraph One

Wendy enjoys Thanksgiving.  It is celebrated in November.  Her family gets together.  She sees many relatives.  They watch the parade on TV.  They eat a big dinner.  They eat turkey.  They eat pies.  Wendy does not like pumpkin pie.  They take a long walk after eating.  It can be cold on the walk.



Paragraph Two

Wendy enjoys Thanksgiving.  It is celebrated in November.  Her family gets together, so she sees many relatives.  They watch the parade on TV and eat a big dinner.  They eat turkey and pies, but Wendy does not like pumpkin pie.  They take a long walk after eating, and it can be cold on the walk.
