What medications can be used in treatment?

This area is constantly evolving. Presently, these arethe current treatments used. There are valid concerns raised in the researchliterature about the efficacy of using stimulant medications in isolation intreating patients with ADHD. While short-term benefits are reported, long-termbenefits from the use of stimulant medication alone seem questionable.(Horowitz, et. al. 1993)

Psychostimulants (most frequently used):
1. Ritalin and SR Ritalin(Slow Release) (methylphenidate HCl)
2. Dexedrine (dextroamphetaminesulfate)
3. Cylert (pemoline)

Tricyclic Antidepressants:
1. Tofranil (imipramine HCl)
2. Norpramin (desipramine HCl)
3. Pamelor (nortriptyline)
4. Elavil (amitriptyline HCl)

Cyclic Antidepressants :
1. Prozac (fluoxetine)
2.Wellbutrin (bupropion HCl)

Antipsychotics (usually used with stimulant):
1.Mellaril (thioridazine HCl)
2. Thorazine (chlorpromazine Hcl)

Antianxiety
1. Atarax (hydroxyzine)

Antihypertensive:
1. Catapres (clonidine)

Others:
1. monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO's)
2.Lithane (lithium carbonate) --- Antimanic
3. Tegretol(caramazepine) --- Antimanic, Antipsychotic

*Note: none of these have been extensively studied for use with children.
