Example of APA format

The following is provided as an example of APA format. It is not intended to be inclusive and if you have specific questions you should check the APA Publication Manual.

All papers should be double spaced, margins should be set at 1 inch all around and you should use a 12 point font in a plain style (e.g. Times New Roman).  You should include a running head and page numbers on all pages.  Be sure to include your name and a title for the paper on the front page.

If you have any questions about how to use the APA citation format you could look at the Shuell (1996) paper in your assigned readings as it provides a good example. There are also other papers in the readings that are particularly good examples of APA style (Salomon, Perkins and Globerson, 1991; Sternberg and Frensch, 1993). However, as Anderson (1998) indicated "there is no substitute for the APA manual" (p. 1).

Things to keep in mind:
-- if you use a quotation, put it in quote marks and be sure to give the page number in the citation.
-- if you do not read the original paper, you must indicate where you did read the material - e.g. it was cited in an article you did read
-- if you do not cite the article in your paper, do not include it in your reference section, that is only for citations from your paper
-- if you are sending in your work via e-mail, do not use any formatting -that means no italics in the references
