Soft
Palate - This region seperates the posterior portion of the mouth from the
posterior portion of the nasal cavity.
Nasopharynx - This is the very back wall ofthe nasal cavity. In the fetal pig, this region
is circular and the epiglottis actually fits into this region.
Glottis - This is the opening of the trachea, or windpipe. The glottis is located at
the crossing point for the food pathway and the air pathway.
Epiglottis - This flao of tissue sits superior to the glottis. When the epiglottis fires,
it covers the glottis. This allows food to pass over the airway without entering
into the pathway.
Tongue - This muscular organ aides in both the movement of food and mechanically digesting
food into smaller chunks.
