TECHNOLOGY IN MY COURSES:

I use WebCT (the College's "closed" on-line course system) in all my courses to make the course syllabus and course handouts available to students on line, thus allowing them to keep up with the course even when they must miss class.  I also use my WebCT course websites to provide audio files to students, to accompany their study of vocabulary and, on occasion, of grammar concepts, as well as to provide answers to assigned grammar exercises, for students to check their comprehension prior to grammar quizzes in class.  I also use WebCT for e-mail communication with my classes outside of class.

SPANISH  &  ITALIAN  COURSES:

As a Full-time Lecturer in Spanish and Italian, specializing in teaching Beginning and Intermediate language courses and, occasionally, Spanish Conversation and Composition, I assist students from a variety of majors to acquire a basic proficiency in the language unxcder study.  My professional interests are in contextualized and communicative lesson and materials development and proficiency-oriented oral achievement testing.  Students continually tell me I have a good knack for presenting and explaining language concepts, as well as for designing meaningful exercises for in-class practice.  My latest teaching-related projects are developing Microsoft PowerPoint presentations for my courses, ranging from colorful, animated presentations of vocabulary and grammar material to PowerPoint slides for in-class activities, and creating WebCT online classrooms for all my courses, so that students have access on-line to the course syllabus and course handouts and assignments given in class.

IST 100-800: Culture Through Film,  and the "WORLD FIRST" Freshman Learning Community:

I currently teach a course every fall semester as part of the SUNY Cortland "World First" Freshman Learning Community.  The course, “Culture Through Film,” has been designed to be part of the integrated set of courses in the “World First” Learning Community:

--  HISTORY  101:   The World Since 1500
--  ANTHROPOLOGY  102:  Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
--  COMPOSITION  100:  Academic Writing I
--  INTERNATIONAL STUDIES  100-800: Culture Through Film
--  a foreign language course
--  COR 101: Cortland Experience

In the World First Learning Community, students and instructors explore and seek to understand aspects of world cultures, and global issues and international connections, both contemporary and historical.

In the course, “Culture Through Film,” students learn about film as a form of artistic expression, through study and examination of the basic narrative and stylistic aspects of film.  Students also develop an awareness of film as a medium of cultural representation and expression, including their own contemporary American culture.  Through the screening, study and discussion of a selection of films tied to the World First Learning Community themes, students also explore global issues such as historical and contemporary colonialism, racism and multiculturalism, human rights, international violence, and global economic structures and related issues such as inequality and poverty.

Work I do with Study Abroad:

College Study Abroad Committee

Principal among my activities in service to the college is my work on the Study Abroad Committee.  This committee works with the College's Office of International Programs in the development of programs abroad, curricular matters, and the review of applications and acceptance of students who apply for study abroad programs.  I am one of the committee members with responsibility for working with our study abroad program in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Since my first years at SUNY Cortland, I have been involved with the Wintersession Program in Cuernavaca, which is a three-week January Wintersession program in Mexico.  In this program, we offer the lower-level Spanish courses (beginning and intermediate) as well as an upper-level course.  It is a wonderful language learning experience and a great study-abroad opportunity in Spanish for students who might not go on to take upper-level Spanish courses.

Faculty Director, SUNY Cortland January Wintersession Program in Cuernavaca, Mexico:

I have had the pleasure of being faculty director for the SUNY Cortland Wintersession Program in Cuernavaca on six occasions, and it's a blast!  I have come to love Mexico and its people, and  I enjoy returning there with new crops of students.  It is a consistently rewarding pleasure for me to interest students in this program, and then to see them enjoy the experience--and Spanish!--so much.
