USB Document Camera - Interactive Online Teaching

For online interactive teaching, for materials development, or for in-person teaching, a document camera can be very handy. A camera set up to show a page in real-time as the teacher writes on it, can be a good replacement for a classroom blackboard or the old overhead projector. Students can see what the teacher is writing. Many document cameras use video outputs that do not easily interface with a computer system, making them useless for online teaching using systems such as Skype, Zoom, Webex that function entirely through a computer.

A document camera can be great for going over homework, quizzes, or tests. It can help the teacher and students build up structures collaboratively (such as verb patterns or adjective agreements).

We will set up USB Document Camera that connects to the computer and whose output can be viewed by students via the desktop video apps.

USB Document Camera

There are many USB Document Cameras available. They connect to one of the computer's USB port. They also come with software that enhances their functionality. Some useful features to look for are:

The USB Document Camera in our illustration is a IPEVO V4K, but many different brands are available.

The document camera plugs into the computer's USB port. The software displays the image and can send it out over a video-conferencing app. The camera resolution should be adjusted if necessary to yield a sharp image.

Unlike a static image, the document camera allows the teacher to interact with the materials. Multiple cameras can be plugged into the computer for a variety of views. In addition, picture in a picture can let students see the teacher at the same time. This can be important in a language class to show facial expressions aa well as the teacher's mouth when speaking. In any class, the teacher's face is important to encourage good interpersonal rapport.

Zoom and highlighting can help the teacher focus the students' attention on specific items in the teaching-learning materials.

Many options can be available in Document Camera software, depending on the specific model. For a larger image of the teacher than is provided by picture-in-a-picture, we could use a side-by-side display.

A document camera can be used to take snapshots or videos to develop materials for later use. Built-in LED lighting could be a useful additional feature.
