CUSeeMe
is an application that enables videoconferencing. The software was developed
by Cornell University and White Pine as an endeavor to create affordable
and workable desktop videoconferencing. You need a very fast modem to run
this with good results. A 56K modem will work, but at times the visual
and audio portions will be out of sync. An ISDN line is really necessary,
but they are costly and so not practical for us. You also need some sort
of video transmission device, such as a camera. With this program, you
can see and talk to someone at the same time. Obviously, this is optimal
communication--you can get the body language, facial expressions, intonations--everything
you can get live except being there. You wouldn't want to use this on a
bad hair day.
