I. OBJECTIVES:
(2.1, 2.2, 4.2) Students discuss soccer tournament in Colombia.
Compare and contrast.
(1.1, 1.2, 3.2) Students read and comprehend the schedule for
the tournament's first round.
(5.1, 5.2) Students find more information about the tournaments
using the WWW, and follow soccer outside of the classroom.
II. MATERIALS:
-Schedule from Copa América
games
-Copa chart
-Overhead of schedule
-Overhead projector
III. PROCEDURES:
PRE-READING:
1. Discuss soccer as a pastime, as well as
the World Cup.
2. Give information regarding the Copa América.
IDENTIFY MAIN ELEMENTS:
1. Read the game schedule (first round only)
and fill in the names of the twelve countries under the correct group in
the first column.
IDENTIFY DETAILS:
1. Find the dates that each country plays
a game.
2. Fill in the time of each game underneath
the appropriate date.
(Each team plays three games over three days).
ORGANIZE/REVISE:
1. Go over the chart as a class. Use
overhead projector to fill in the times on the chart.
RECREATE TEXT:
1. Students will use local sports teams to
create a tournament schedule, including local arenas.
