As a political science major, I knew that I wanted and needed to go to another country to study another political system. Since I also wanted to improve upon my Spanish, I was naturally drawn to Venezuela. I was thrilled to learn that SUNY Cortland offered a program in Merida, a city located high in the Andes. I could take not only Spanish classes but political science classes taught in English. So off I went for the fall semester of my senior year--- excited and nervous. It is difficult to explain in words my experience. It was the most amazing time of my life. I saw incredible places, fell in love with the culture and people, and gained a new perspective of the role the U.S. plays in world affairs. My classes, although challenging, really stimulated me. And......I can now say I can speak another language fluently (which I know will help me in my job search when I graduate). My only regret-- that I did not study abroad sooner! My advice to other students--- JUST DO IT! |
