Social Studies Mini-Unit Plan
Assignment description and corresponding grading rubric:

Social Studies Mini-Unit Plan
(Should be uploaded to TaskStream)

Throughout the duration of this course, you are asked to develop a social studies mini-unit plan. The first step in completing this assignment is to consider the grade level that you are placed during your field experience and determine a topic for a social studies mini-unit plan. After you have determined a topic of study, take time to list desired student outcomes for the unit plan. Answering a question such as: "What would you like students to learn?" helps to determine desired student outcomes.

Once you've determined a topic of study and listed your desired student outcomes, it's time to create at least five connected lesson plans that will become your unit plan. Afterward, determine a title for your social studies mini-unit that provides an overarching idea to your topic of study. Please refer to the following outline when setting up the unit that you create:

Lesson Plan #1
This first lesson plan should provide a way for you to survey students to determine their prior knowledge on the topic of study.

This lesson should introduce your topic of study in a way that is exciting and captivating to your students.

This lesson should have students become engaged in initial inquiry on the topic of study.

Lesson Plan #2
This second lesson plan should provide students with an opportunity to practice new knowledge/skills students obtained from lesson #1 and to further develop that knowledge/skill with additional information on the topic of study. This lesson plan should connect information from lesson #1 with new knowledge/skills to desired outcomes listed on this plan.

This lesson plan should include a children's literature book that portrays your topic of study.

Lesson Plan #3
This third lesson plan should provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge from lessons #1 and #2 to a given task, activity or project.

The student outcomes of this plan should provide students with a way to demonstrate what they've learned so you can begin to evaluate and assess students' new knowledge/skill gains from these three connected lessons.

This lesson plan should include primary documents of information that portrays your topic of study.

Lesson Plan #4
This fourth lesson plan should provide students with an opportunity to review and extend their knowledge by utilizing multiple resources such as technology, additional literature, outside guest speakers, field trips, etc. This lesson plan should provide a way to assess students' knowledge gains.
