Here are the notes from this past week in
class: I wasn't in
class this week because I took an undergraduate class to
Cortland's Camp Huntington located in Raquette Lake, NY. Our
class visited the library and was greeted by
Lorraine Melita.
Lorraine serves as a bibliographer for the School of Education and
is in a role to support you as students through your research and
library use. She spent some time orienting us to the online
databases that you can use to conduct research searches from
campus and from home. While online, we visited some sites that are
important for you to know and use as you begin your own research
for your mini-literature review assignment. The sites that she
spent some time on were the
Memorial
Library (the library located on campus),
Education
Resources Information Center (ERIC) and Education Abstracts.
You can access the Memorial Library off campus but for the ERIC
and Education Abstracts databases, you will need to use your
Cortland ID number to access those services. To find this site, go to the
Memorial Library and click in find articles. Remember, there are
many databases that include reference information. Each database
is created to reference articles and documents that represent a
particular area of interest. The ERIC database is sponsored by
the Institute of Education Sciences, part of the U.S. Department
of Education. The Education Abstracts database is maintained by
the H. W. Wilson Company out of NYC and has many full-text
articles available online. Both databases will serve as a wonderful resource to you throughout your
research projects.
As part of our
library visit, students also spent some time in the
Teaching
Materials Center (TMC). The TMC is in a separate wing of the
library which serves as a central location for a vast collection teaching materials
that can be signed out for use. Some of the items that are found
in the TMC include videos, children's books, audio tapes, games,
journals, big books, teacher and student editions of textbooks,
and more. Please plan to visit the TMC when you have some time to
further review the materials that are there for your reference and
use.
That's all for this week.
Keep reading, keep learning and keep coming to class!
