Assignment: Reading Responses
Assignment description and corresponding grading rubric:

Reading Responses

You are asked to write a 2-3 page response to the assigned reading four times throughout this course. Reading Response assignments will not be accepted late. Please use double-spaced 12-point font. The reading responses have two components that are outlined in the following description.

For each reading response, the first component is to write about the topics from the reading that you find important. Of course, there is much information from the reading that is critically important for you to know and understand. However, for this assignment, it is not realistic or necessary for you to comment on every important detail from the reading. Do your best to determine what you deem most important for you to know as an emerging teacher and focus on that information to include in your reading response.

Some of the statements listed below might help you think about this assignment. Be specific about what you believe is the most important information from your assigned reading. Write to explain this information in your own words. Please do not in any way copy any information directly from the text without citing it.

The second component of this assignment is to weave your own understandings of the topics throughout your response by providing specific examples of students you've worked with and/or reflecting on your own experiences.

The following examples will help you to better complete this assignment:

An incomplete response: The reading was interesting and provided insights into the technological resources that the Internet can be for teachers.

A better response: The reading was interesting to me because it provided insights into the technological resources that the Internet can be for teachers. For example, when Berson, (2004) mentioned, "The U.S. Department of Education reported in 2001 that approximately 98 percent of schools have the capacity to support online initiatives" (p. 7), I was reminded of my own involvement with technology when I was in elementary school.

The most complete response: The reading was interesting to me because it provided insights into the technological resources that the Internet can be for teachers. For example, when Berson, (2004) mentioned, "The U.S. Department of Education reported in 2001 that approximately 98 percent of schools have the capacity to support online initiatives" (p. 7), I was reminded of my own involvement with technology when I was in elementary school. I recall learning about the ways to use the computer to type short research papers and using the spell check. However, I was in elementary school at a time before the Internet was being widely used in schools as an effective teaching tool. After reading this chapter, I now realize the benefit of embedding technological resources into my teaching…
