EDU 647: Social Education in the Digital Age

Notes for the week of April 5, 2006

Here are the notes from this past week in class:

This week, we discussed the Webquests and how to use them in the social studies classroom. We spent some time viewing webquests to learn about their advantages and limitations.

To begin this discussion, students independently read the following short essay found online: Some Thoughts About Webquests by Bernie Dodge. Dr. Dodge works at San Diego State University and was the original creator of Webquests.

In class, students viewed the following webquests in pairs,  and chose one to evaluate. When doing so, students referred to the following questions:

1. What was the content of  the webquest?

2. How was the ease of navigation?

3. How helpful were all tasks and activities for students to learn new information?

4, How well was the scaffolding of tasks and activities?

5. What resources/links were provided? What do you think about them?

Here are the links for the Webquests that were viewed in class:

1. I Can Be a Patriot!

2. Animals Along the River

5. Save the Puppies

6. Checking out China!

7. Ancient Egypt

8. Explorers of America

Afterward, students spent some time using the following link to search for additional Webquests:

http://webquest.org/search/

We also looked at the following site which provides helpful Webquest templates for creating new Webquests:

That's all for this week. Keep reading, keep learning and keep coming to class!
