EDU 647: Social Education in the Digital Age

Notes for the week of February 15, 2006

Here are the notes from this past week in class:

We discussed answers to the following question: What is meant by the term Technological Literacy? As you read Warschauer's Chapter 2: Models of Access… Devices, Conduits and Literacy this week, be sure to focus on the following:
What skills are needed for teachers' technological literacy?
What skills are needed for students' technological literacy?
What competencies do teachers need for competence with digital/technological social studies literacy?
Be sure to be able to identify 9 areas of competency:
general computer knowledge, file management systems, system maintenance, word processing skills, communication skills, web skills, databases, spreadsheets, presentation skills.

In class, students used Microsoft Word drawing tools to create a semantic map to address Students' Technological Literacy and Teachers' Technological Literacy. Word drawing tools are a valuable component to the Word application and knowing how to utilize these elements can help to enhance classroom instruction.

In class, we also discussed whether students consider themselves to be
a 'digital native' or a 'digital immigrant'. We discussed that elementary students come to classrooms with either a digital native perspective or a digital immigrant perspective to technology.

How have the expectations of literacy changed? In class, students independently took some  time to view  and read the following website:
http://webpages.charter.net/ljloeffler/Futurist/id7.htm

What competencies do your students (future students) need for competence with digital/technological social studies literacy? This is the "net generation".
How can we merge social studies literacy with technological literacy? Consider: How would we know that a student has competence with social studies literacy? How would we know that a student has competence with technological literacy? What model can you create to show your ideas about this?

In class, we began  to view different sites to identify ways that sites can be organized and formatted. View the following websites:

Mrs. Tabereaux's Fifth Grade Website:

Mrs. Borkowski's Second Grade Website:

Be sure that you have established webspace on the Cortland server. Please go to http://web.cortland.edu to do so.

In class we also reviewed the Children's Social Studies Website Review and Analysis assignment. An electronic copy of this assignment description is located in the assignments section of this website for your reference.

Students will have time to work independently on upcoming assignments next week as I'll be away at Camp Huntington in Raquette Lake, NY with an undergraduate class. Therefore, it's important that students email me their assignment next week. I'll see you on the 27th. That's all for this week!

Keep reading, keep learning and keep coming to class! ~Kim
