Notes for the week of February 26, 2007

Here are the notes from this past week in class:

I provided students with some time to discuss field placements and took time to answer questions regarding field situations.

We reviewed how to write a literature review and I handed out a paper describing steps to take when writing a literature review. I mentioned that it is critical that students begin their lit. reviews soon as they will take a considerable amount of time to complete.

In class, I briefly began to discuss differentiated instruction. I began our discussion by suggesting that a classroom environment should offer students low threat and high challenge. Teachers should strive to have their students feel relaxed while learning yet excited or emotionally engaged in the activities. We as teachers need to be ongoingly aware that our statements, interactions and behaviors in the classroom can either serve to promote an environment of low threat and high challenge or one where frustration, anxiety and tension is present. To provide a deeper understanding of this, I showed part of a video simulation by Rick Lavoie called F.A.T. City - Frustration, Anxiety and Tension. Although Rick shows how frustraiton, anxiety and tension is often experienced by students with learning disabilities, I used the video to demonstrate ways that all students might experience similar feelings while in classroom settings. For more information on Lavoie's work, you may want to visit his website at: http://www.ricklavoie.com/gateindex.html

That's all for this week. Please remember to bring your IRB proposals to class next week.

Keep reading, keep learning and keep coming to class!
