EDU 514: Community Service Learning Project

Project Description: You are to create, participate and reflect on a Community Service Learning Project for this course. Your community service project should improve the quality of life for someone or a group of residents in a community. This project offers you with a way to "give back" to your community and to demonstrate your commitment to improving society in some way.

Your community service learning project must be connected to a social studies topic of your choice. Throughout the semester, you are to actively participate for a minimum of three visits to your chosen site. You are to attend the site for a minimum of two hours for each visit. This will help you to begin to establish yourself in the community, establish relationships with those you are serving and to foster civic responsibility.

During each service session, you are to document that you have participated in service work by collecting artifacts representing your contributions to the community. Please be sure to save, sort and date all artifacts.

At the end of the semester, you will compile your community service artifacts and make connections to the content from our course, blending your academic growth and community service work.

To demonstrate your community service and learning, you will create a freestanding poster that depicts the following:

(1)   Your goal(s) of your community service project

(1)   A detailed description of the community that you served

(1)   A summary of what you did and learned each time you visited the site (journal entries)

(1)   What you learned about yourself and community service through this project (reflection)

(1)   Your future plans to continue community service work
