Use only your social security number to identify yourself - NO NAMES! Your log should have the following parts: Section 1. Typed responses to homework questions (100-200 words) Section 2. Written work done in class (handwritten OK) Section 3. Reflections on class work and readings (done outside class; handwritten OK). I recommend that you do reflections 2-3 times/ week. Do not wait until the night before you turn in your log. See my website for suggestions. A good idea is to pick a passage from some part of the book and comment on it. Also, try to connect ideas from one unit to another. Section 4. Typed analytic essay - (350-500 words). Pick one piece of writing from your Sections 1, 2 or 3 and revise it. Please include the original version. Your essay must address scientific issues and must present an argument or conceptual analysis, not just a description or summary of ideas. Grading: You will be graded on the quality of your work, i.e. how well you explain important concepts, how closely you follow directions, how clearly you write, and how interesting your ideas are. You will also be graded on the quantity of your work., i.e., how long your entries are, how many homework assignments and pieces of in class writing you have completed, and how many reflections you have made. General directions: Put all your work in a manilla folder marked with your social security number on the tab. Separate Sections 1 - 4 from one another. Put them in different parts of your log that are clearly labeled. Be sure to use your own words when explaining concepts and points from class and the text. Copying from handouts or books or websites is plagiarism! It is a good idea to use quotes and paraphrases to focus your thoughts and make clear what ideas you are explaining though. Just be sure to explain quotes in your own words so I can judge your level of understanding. Cite page numbers for all quotes and paraphrases please. See my homepage under resources for writing for tips on avoiding plagiarism. |
