Troubleshooting our First Try

Hey, folks, our First Try is pretty hectic, isn't it. Here are some clues to help you out of some confusions before we meet next time. It is ok if you are still confused. Hopefully we'll get things (some if not all) straightened up next week and the following weeks.

1. Get a Cortland email account:

I hope everyone has already set up a Cortland email account. In case you still haven't figured out how, go to http://webmail.cortland.edu/, click "Create Student Webmail Account" and follow the steps. Before we meet next time, I'd like to see everyone has your Cortland email account set.

2. Create a Web Account:

Most of you already got a confirmation screen stating "Web Folder Created Successfully" after you followed the steps. That means this step is done and you can proceed to the next step, FTP.

3. FTP

This is to upload your files to the Cortland Web Server so that both you and the whole world! can see your website.

To open FTP, go to Start (on the lower left hand corner of your computer screen), Click All Programs, Choose WS_FTP LE.

When filling out user name, we normally use "cortland/yourusername (the part of your email address in front of @, it is case sensitive!) but it did not work for all of us in Moffett though that is supposed to be the "normal" way (from authories ;-)  http://acs.cortland.edu/Assets/Linked%20files/ExchangeWebPages.html). But some of you tried "cortland.edu/yourusername" and it worked! Part of using Technology and getting things work is this kind of trails. I am happy to see that you have the spirit and let's keep it up: trying and testing and be positive.

The thing is that "cortland.edu/username" always works though "cortland/username" works for some (for instance, both ways work for me in Moffett and other labs).

4. What if you want to practice the web design on your computer

You surely need to practice and work on your web/ePortfolio out of class because our class time is very limited. The easiest way is to work on your stuff in the computer labs on campus. Some labs are open 24 hours - check the Lab in Room C21 Van Hoesen.

For those of you who need to work on your own computer, you need to download and install the Netscape Composer on your computer.

To download Netscape composer, go here: http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/archive.jsp, choose the Versions 7.x (that is the version in most of our on campus labs for now). We would not spend time on this in class because this is not needs for majority and we have a lot more to accomplish.

If you cannot figure out the downloading and installing, make an appointment with me and I'll walk you through.
