[February 4, 2002, I received an email from Reed Van Orden Maloney, a great-great-grandson of Hoyt. Reed wrote:

My great-great-grandfather Lucius H. Hoyt was in fact taken prisoner in Deep Gully, NC and kept in the Florence, SC stockade until March of 1865 at which time he was sent to Wilmington, NC to be exchanged. It was then found that Fort Fischer had been captured and Wilmington was to be evacuated he was paroled in the field.

I also have in my possession a photograph and historical writing by him as to his experiences during this period.

Lucius lived to be 85 years old after recovering from his service in the war.]
