Model Description
Framework developed by Robert Mager is a comprehensive set of methods
for the design and delivery of training programs. It is delivered in
a variety of different media
Specification of Theory
(a) Goals and preconditions
Students obtain motivation to complete self driven training and instruction
to learn.
(b) Principles
Students work on their own to attain information presented to them in
a variety of media.
(c) Condition of learning
The conditions for learning are all inner. The student needs to be movtivated
by him/her self and the student needs to take the exams to self assess
in order to move on. It seems these modules are completed either while
at work in an office during allotted study time, in a classroom setting
with a time limit or on the students’ own time.
(d) Required media
Sort of. Yes. Video tapes, computer based instruction…but this
all depends on how the instruction has been designed. It is not a requirement,
but if it is needed, it is used to enhance instruction.
(e) Role of facilitator
Each course has a manager that administers the program and helps students
along if the student has problems. Students work through the material
themselves with self motivation and at their own pace.
(f) Instructional strategies
1. Goal/Task analysis – identify what needs/should be learned
2. Performance objectives – exact specification of the outcomes
to be accomplished and how they will be evaluated.
3. Criterion referenced testing – evaluation of learning in terms
of the knowledge/skills specified in the objectives
4. Development of learning modules tied to specific objectives.
(g) Assessment method
Students take tests at the end of each module to assess mastery. If they
have mastered, the move on to the next set of modules.
