  • COR 101 Cortland Experience

    COR 101 is designed to facilitate the intellectual and social integration of first-time college students into the academic community at SUNY Cortland. The course is designed to engage students into critical thinking about their personal, academic, and social development as they make the transition to college life. This section will have an emphasis on the SUNY Cortland Sport Management Program.

    SPM 100 Computer Applications

    Computing applications in various academic disciplines; topics include operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, database, communications, the Internet, current topics, and a brief introduction to computers and their impact on society.

    SPM 227 Stadium and Arena Management

    Devoted to teaching students how to supervise, market, finance, schedule and administer stadiums and arenas. Deals in areas of maintenance, daily operations and contracting of the building.     SPM 320 Sport Entrepreneurship

    A detailed analysis of the management and marketing of sporting goods companies and sport retail businesses including e-commerce in sport-related enterprises. Students will study trends, display, target marketing, marketing demographics, customerS service, and the basic functions of seSlling and managing a retail business operation. Purchasing, inventory control, cost and price analysis, supplier relationships, offshore procurement, and quality and ethical considerations will be examined.

    SPM 335 Information Technology in Sport Management

    This course, the only one of its kind in the nation, focuses on a comprehensive investigation of the current applications of information technology (IT) in the sport industry. Students will both examine and apply sport-specific IT using real-world industry examples, case studies, assignments and projects. In addition, several sports IT companies will be profiled and the career opportunities they present will be actively discussed. The areas of sport IT that will be covered include the business of information technology, information systems, the history of computers, Internet revenue & advertising in sport, sport Web sites & Web design, presentation, spreadsheet & database software applications in sport, customer relationship management, database marketing, networking principles, desktop publishing, graphic design, digital video, virtual imaging, electronic & online ticketing systems, video display systems, sport video games and fantasy sports.

    SPM 435 Applied Information Technology in Sport Management

    Theoretical and practical knowledge of the application of sport-specific information technology involving digital video, databases, Web design and graphic design. Students will be trained to use proprietary industry software as provided to the Sport Media and Technology Learning Center. This course leads to certification in various industry-related software packages that may include one of the following tracks: web and graphic design, digital video editing & analysis, video display systems, ticketing operations.

    SPM 440 International Sport Enterprise

    Focus on the globalization of sport with an emphasis on the organization, governance, and management of international sport, including the Olympic & Paralympic Games, America’s Cup Yacht Racing, plus the FIFA World Cup (men and women). Students will conduct a comprehensive investigation of the structural and cultural environments in which multi-national organizations and corporations must consider in conducting business in foreign markets. A major semester long group project will be required that includes the development of a bid document for either a World Championships in a major international sport or a future Olympic/Paralympic Games in 2014 or 2016.

    SPM 635 Information Technology in Sport Management

    This course provides a comprehensive investigation of the current applications of information and communication technology and database management utilized in sport organizations within the intercollegiate, professional, international segments of the sport industry. Students will use common database, spreadsheet and proprietary software used within the industry to analyze and solved management problems.

    SPM 655 - Sport Event Management

    An overview of all the theoretical and practical elements involved in planning, organizing, staffing, marketing and implementing a sports event. Particular attention is focused on human resources, fiscal and risk management including security and insurance. Examination of cases of different types of events that occur in different environments under variable financial constraints. (3 cr. hr.)
