James T. Reese Jr., Ed.D.
Associate Professor/Graduate Coordinator
Department of Sport Management

Dr. Jim Reese became the coordinator of the newly established graduate Sport Management program at SUNY Cortland beginning fall semester of 2006.

Prior to accepting a position at SUNY Cortland, Dr. Reese began a tenure-track teaching position at Ohio University in the fall of 1999. In 2005, he was promoted to Associate Professor, earned tenure, and became Coordinator of the undergraduate Sport Management program. He also volunteered as the undergraduate Internship Coordinator for the Sport Management program from 2000-2006. Under his leadership, the Sport Management program established a partnership with the Sales Centre in the College of Business to create a Sport Management specific Sales Certificate program, at the time, one of the few programs of its kind in the nation.

At Ohio University, Dr. Reese taught undergraduate and graduate classes in the areas of ticket operations, marketing, sponsorship and licensing, governance and ethics, and risk management. He was instrumental in the creation of a corporate ticketing partnership with TicketReturn, a ticketing software company prominent in college athletics and Minor League Baseball. The partnership allowed students to be trained on TicketReturn software in the classroom, and in the Ohio Athletics Ticket Office, to better prepare them for jobs and internships in ticketing upon graduation.

From a service perspective at Ohio University, Dr. Reese volunteered in a variety of areas including serving as a ticketing advisor for the Southern Ohio Copperheads collegiate summer league baseball team, faculty advisor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the men's club basketball team, assisted with the Athens, OH, area chapter of the Special Olympics, and volunteered for Crime Watch in The Plains, OH.

In addition to Dr. Reese's teaching responsibilities while at Ohio University, he served as the Vice President of IFSA/USA (International Federation of Strength Athletes), the United States governing body for the sport of professional strongman from July 2002 until November 2003. In 2004 and 2005, he also worked as a sponsorship consultant for Curb-Agajanian Performance Group, a NASCAR Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series race team.

Prior to teaching at Ohio University, Dr. Reese served as a ticketing administrator with the Denver Broncos Football Club from 1996-1999 where he had an opportunity to be involved in the ticket planning and execution of Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII. He also worked as an assistant tennis coach and facility management assistant in the athletics departments at Georgia Southern University (1994-1996) and the University of Northern Colorado (1996-1998). While at Georgia Southern, Dr. Reese also served as a sales assistant and personal trainer at Gold's Gym in Statesboro, GA.

Dr. Reese earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Andrews Presbyterian College (1988-Laurinburg, NC) in Business/Economics; a Master of Science degree from Georgia Southern University (1995-Statesboro, GA) in Sport Management; and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Northern Colorado (1999-Greeley, CO) in Sport Administration.

While in college, Dr. Reese was a two-sport athlete in baseball and track. Since then, he has sport related work experience in college and professional sports in the areas of ticket operations, sales, marketing, sponsorship, and facility and event management.

Dr. Reese was born in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in Plainfield, NJ, until the age of 13. His family then moved to the Pottsville, PA area where his extended family still resides. Dr. Reese, his wife Candace, and their son Nathan live in Cortland, NY.
