Lin Lin - Assistant Professor

Welcome

Dear Esteemed Reviewers and Colleagues:

I am honored to have the opportunity to share in this electronic portfolio of what I have accomplished since I was reappointed in 2008.

Please accept this portfolio as my application for continuing appointment (tenure) review AND promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor.

Before I came to study for my Ph.D in the United States in 2000, I was an associate professor of English and American Studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing, China. SUNY Cortland acknowledged my previous experiences and awarded me two-year prior service credits. Therefore, my tenure clock ticks faster and I am now applying for the continuing appointment AND promotion to associate professor, fully aware that I should meet and exceed the same sets of requirements for tenure and promotion within four years.

The last two reappointments greatly encouraged me to continue teaching with more confidence and a forward-looking vision about social studies curriculum and instruction as a tenure track assistant professor in the Department of Childhood and Early Childhood Education in the School of Education. All the comments from reviewers at all levels were carefully reflected and highly appreciated. While I was thankful for all the positive and encouraging comments from all reviewers, I had high expectations for myself to achieve more in teaching, scholarly work, and service. I can share with you in this portfolio with confidence that I have met AND exceeded the standard requirements for tenure and promotion to associate professorship. I believe this web portfolio supports my application for continuing appointment and promotion from assistant professor to associate professor in SUNY Cortland.

It's hard to believe I have been here for four years. If I was trying hard to survive for the first two years (Fall 2005 to Fall 2006), the last two years (Fall 2007 and Fall 2009) found me beginning to thrive. From surviving to thriving, I have found myself stay enthusiastic and committed in my work. There have been many changes in my life, but teaching, scholarly work, and service remain the three major components of my professional experiences in Cortland. Advisement and professional development are also important components of my Cortland experiences. You will read a reflective essay depicting my academic growth in three areas -- teaching, scholarly work, and service since the first and second reappointment reviews. You may also read reflective essays in the areas of advisement and professional development. Supporting evidence of my academic growth is provided in each of the areas listed in the left-hand bar.

On this page, you will review five parts. Please click each of the following topics to read more for each part.

Please NOTE: Throughout this webfolio, all links in blue color should be active links to lead you to a piece of evidence. Once you get to the evidence page, please hit "backward" arrow on the top left-hand corner of your Internet brower to return to the previous page, or go to the bottom of each page and hit "return to homepage" when it is available.

2. The approval letters at all levels for my reappointments in 2006, 2008, and 2009

3. DSI recommendation letters at all levels and approval letters from President Erik Bitterbaum

With the support of colleagues in my department and colleagues from other departments on and beyond campus, I have made significant and considerable progress in all areas pertaining to this review process for continuing appointment and promotion to associate professorship. On March 27, 2010, I was recognized at Women of Color's Celebration of Women: Jugglers of Professions, Managers of Lives. I am proud of my achievement, but without your support, I do not think I could have accomplished this much.

I appreciate your time to review this portfolio and look forward to sharing your thoughtful and reflective insights on all reviewed areas of my accomplishments.

Sincerely,

林 琳
